CHLA Sends Letter to US House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs

The Community Home Lenders of America (CHLA) supports legislative efforts to create a partial indemnification program that assists veterans and active-duty families without increasing costs for taxpayers or other VA borrowers. CHLA emphasizes the importance of structuring the program to avoid disrupting the mortgage market, specifically by ensuring the VA guarantee is not reduced by attaching it to a second note on VA loans. CHLA awaits a Congressional Budget Office score and suggests cost-saving adjustments—such as lowering the 20% cap to 15% and adding a small interest rate if payments aren’t resumed within three years. CHLA sees this as a valuable addition to the VA’s toolkit for preventing foreclosure while safeguarding the program’s integrity.
